It has been a year since Dogmillrehomers was urgently set up to rescue the dogs from the puppymill. Most of the dogs have been successfully rehomed. Though we are not officially registered, the team has not stopped our efforts to help animals in need. We have not forgotten the help and support from many people - volunteers, donors, fosterers, adopters, the media and other societies throughout this project and the past year. ...

We would like to invite everyone to join us for this 2 day gathering - Saturday 16 April 2011 11am to 5pm and Sunday 17 April 2011 11am to 5pm.

One of our 85, Naomi the Lab, died from liver problems after one month of daily visits to the vet.. She had been adopted and had experienced some love during the past months after years as a breeding dog. Rest in peace, Naomi.

Roxy is 4-5 years old. Just had hip surgery on both sides and has recovered well. Roxy is a sweet natured and mild temperament dog, very obedient and is paper trained. She has developed a bit of cataract in her eyes but that can be rectified later. Currently need to walk her often and some swimming will be good for her too.

TV programme on our work (repeat broadcast)

To those who had missed the Chinese TV current affairs programme FRONTLINE - (they will be showing our work and discussing the issue of puppymills after their feature on the National Day Parade):there will be a repeat broadcast on Tuesday 10 August 2010, 1.30pm, channel 8.

You will probably recognise some of our dogs in the video/ stills. Sheila, Bullet, Audi, etc
It will have stills/videos of those who died as well: Blessing the GR puppy, Shiro the Sheltie, Penelope(the GSD, not among our 85 dogs but some of our people were involved in her rescue). Very moving.

Phase II Leadership Team and Adoption Drive Update

PHASE II LEADERSHIP TEAM
We thank all who have been involved in Phase I of our work: Derrick, Leng, Cohen, Zainap, Spencer, Alycia (the 6 on the leadership team) Monica, Lorna, Lynda, Tyler, Natasha, Woon, Eunice (Key Assistants), the large number of volunteers, sponsors, supporters (photographers included!) and well wishers. Phase I involved taking care of the dogs in Kennel 9 (a lot of work- feeding, washing, medicating, transporting dogs to and from vets, etc), raising awareness of their plight and starting the process of finding homes for the 85.

With the move to Mutts and Mittens the need for labour intensive work and daily roster of volunteers decreased substantially. M and M staff helped us to clean and feed the dogs. The team concentrated on settling the dogs in, sending them to the vets for sterilisation, vaccination and treatment of chronic illnesses. More work was done on getting fosterers and adoptors. Some of the initial team members had to return to their normal routine or work (after working almost full time for the months when 'all hands on deck' was the order of the day). Some are focusing their attention on the care of specific dogs- fostering them because these are in great need of individual care. New team members were recruited for Phase II.

1. We will be updating the latest list of dogs available for adoption/ adopted etc within the next few days.

4. Our Golden Retriever pup Thomas has difficulty swallowing and retaining his food.Some vets suspect Canine Megaesophagus. While waiting for more investigation, we have created a 'Bailey chair' for him (this type of chair is used to feed dogs in a 'raised' position). See our first tries at feeding him today....

He needs to be fed 3 times a day ie 9am, 1pm and 4pm. If you can help, please email us ATTENTION : Monica. Thank you.
(Yes, Thomas is looking for a good home as well!)

NEWS UPDATE on 8 June: Thomas died tonight. He had congenital problems possibly due to inbreeding. He was found to have cancer as well. RIP Thomas.

5. ANOTHER ABANDONED DOG FOUND at the Pasir Ris puppymill area today (Sunday 6 June)

Several of our Dogmillrehomers' leaders and leaders of other dog shelters helped to rescue the GSD.

She is now receiving treatment at the vet clinic.

1.What happened to the Puppy Mill?

As reported, the previous owner attempted to sell his business as he could not manage it financially and logistically. We were alerted to this development and after serious deliberation, chose to take a stand for the lives of the dogs inside the Mill. We contacted the ex-owner and bought over the puppy mill from him, and the rest is history.

2.What is the intention?

We have one intention only: the care and welfare of the dogs.

3.Who are you people?

We are a group of regular people, with regular jobs, with a passion for the betterment of animal welfare, even in the face of unrelenting objections. We are not breeders: have never been and never will be.

4. I received an SMS!! Is that true?

It has come to our attention that an SMS has been spreading around like wildfire: we would like to clarify a few things:

a) Yes the SMS was referring to OUR shelter, and not another new shelter. It is however, Inaccurate, Misinformed, and NOT created by any of the volunteers.

b) The DogMillRehomers will ONLY use our Facebook group page and this website as our medium of communication.

All other forms, be it via SMS, other blogs, emails etc are NOT affiliated NOR created by the DogMillRehomers. As such, that information could be potentially skewed and wholly inaccurate. Please disregard any and all information that you did not receive via this page or our Facebook page.

c) We understand that people want to help and contribute. We thank and appreciate you for that. However, coming down to the Kennel without prior appointment creates chaos and largely hamper and creates problems for our work.

Imagine a kennel filled with 30 people all gushing for the attention of a few volunteers who have to divide their attention between the welfare of the dogs and the vast amount of humans.

We are committed to serving the welfare of the dogs in the best way possible, and your sensitivity and consideration in this matter is imperative to the integrity of our project.

PLEASE ONLY VISIT VIA APPOINTMENTS.

We assure you that visiting via appointments is critical to the project. Your kindness and generosity is the cornerstone to the success of the rehoming project. Please continue to contribute this way.

d) We will never put down any dogs. That is absolutely contrary to our mission and belief. We did not come all this way to go down that path.

All of the dogs have already been relocated to a new, cleaner location at Mutts and Mittens. There are full-time staff taking care of the dogs. The rental is much cheaper than the previous location as Mutts and Mittens is offering us a special charity price to shelter the dogs. We appreciate their kindness in this.

e) THERE ARE NO PUPPIES.

5.Are you not worried that you might be sustaining a vicious cycle of abandonment?

We get that some people are worried that we may be sustaining a vicious cycle of abandonment where breeders continually dump “old stock” to kind hearted animal lovers when the breeders are done using them.

A fellow volunteer Lorna sums it up for us nicely in a post:

" If I were a pug or the corgi or one of the 75 dogs, it would make a GREAT DIFFERENCE TO ME if I was rescued or left to die in the darkness of the rusty cage at the puppy/dog mill.

Bottom line- if I had to choose between being an analyst/armchair critic/numbers cruncher/UN or govt agency director who sees the BIG PICTURE or Mother Theresa- I would choose the latter.

Each dog counts. We save ONE AT A TIME. We DO NOT sacrifice even one for the sake of a 'theoretical principle'/academic discussion that might perpetuate the problem. There are other ways of fighting the puppymill/dogmill problem. Holding back on INDIVIDUAL rescue of the dogs IS NOT the way. When we devalue one life, we devalue ALL LIVES...

6.Are you an Organisation?

Currently, we are *not* affiliated with any welfare group or association. We understand that earlier on, there was a slight confusion as to whether we were related to another Shelter. We would like to clarify that we are *not* affiliated to them, or any Shelters/Organizations at the moment.

7.I have some questions, can I call or SMS you?

Please understand that the phone numbers being circulated online belongs to Derrick personally and it is having a massively negative impact on him due to the flood of SMSes and phone calls. Please note that we do not take any further phone or SMS inquiries at this moment. Please contribute by spreading the word that ALL further enquiries should be sent to dogmillrehomers@hotmail.com .

PLEASE keep your subject line short and simple (so that we can read your emails faster!) Long convoluted email subjects are very difficult for our volunteers to understand quickly and delays response. Thank you!

8.How are the dogs now?

The dogs are being sent for medical checkups and assessments. The dogs that are in bad shape have been sent as a priority and are currently in fostering. The hygiene of the kennels are maintained through regular washing, disinfecting etc. The dogs are well-fed and medicated regularly with advice from our vets on their diets and well-being.

The dogs have now moved out of UNIT 9 and are now currently residing in Mutts and Mittens, who have graciously allowed residency of our dogs at a special charity price. They are receiving the necessary attention and care from the staff at Mutts and Mittens. We appreciate and thank them for it.

Many of the dogs are still undergoing medical intervention and as such, donations directly to our Vet is appreciated to defray our ballooning vet fees.

9.I would like to donate supplies directly, how do I do that?

Please refer to the wish list on the side column on the right to understand what supplies the shelter currently needs. We have been contacted by suppliers who are willing to sell to us at wholesale prices in bulk, so please note that there is an option to get from us, cheaply, some of the supplies.

11.I would like to volunteer, what should I know?

Currently, we no longer require volunteering services as our dogs have moved to a better place with full-time care and at a cheaper rental rate than the previous shelter. We thank you for the kind intentions and invite you to consider contributing in other ways, via donations or through educating your friends.

12.I would like to foster/adopt, what are the procedures?

Fostering refers to the intermediate stage whereby dogs are nursed back to health by a fosterer until an adopter can be found. Fosterers will be screened by our volunteers and will be registered for bookkeeping. A questionnaire will be required to be filled prior to fostering.

Adoption will take the following steps:

A Screening interview
An adoption fee
An adoption paper to sign
Follow up visit to the home

All our dogs are matured ex-breeding dogs. They are aged from 5 years and above. There are NO puppies. Many of them are currently not in the best of physical conditions, although they are all seeing huge leaps of improvement with tender love and medical care.

Adoption is a commitment, not just to the adoptors but to the Dog Mill Rehomers as well. As such, we seek your kind understanding in that the process may appear to be stringent at times. We assure you that every potential adoptor is important to the dogs and us; we are not making it stringent to prove a point. All that we do, we do so for the welfare of the dogs and the adoptors and their families.

Our Stance On Clarity and Transparency

Dear fellow dog lovers, the DogMillRehomers is committed to the welfare of the dogs, as well as to the integrity and clarity of this project. We believe that facts, civility and objective reasoning is the key towards mutual respect and understanding. We believe that communication to you, the community, is a fundamental responsibility and cannot be denied.

As such, we are presenting the facts as they happened, for the intention of clarity and because we see you, the whole community, as co-contributors of the Project. We are all together in this, and we place trust in your understanding of the matter.

>>First night: We got the news that a dog mill owner was letting go of his business (after management and financial failure). 6 of the sickest, most medically-challenged dogs were rescued. At this point in time, buying the farm is not a consideration.

Subsequently, it dawned upon us that we were faced with a choice.There was a choice of just saving the 6 and leaving the rest behind to a life of breeding after being sold to other breeders, or to take immediate action. We chose action. We pooled together our resources and bought over the farm from the ex-breeder to convert it into a shelter.

The $11k that we spent was a long way off what B (the ex-owner) was asking for. The $11k was stated on a contract to be the minimum sum required for B (the ex-owner) to payoff his debts (to suppliers and etc) and also for ONE month of leasing at the farm/shelter (so that we can set things in motion). We did not spend the $11k to enrich B's life. B gained no monetary benefits.

(Please read our FAQ for a full understanding of why we chose this path)

B (The ex-owner whom we bought the farm from) was subletting a portion of his building to another breeder (whom we shall call M). When we bought over the farm, we only bought over the portion of the building that B controls. The portion of the building that M leases was not within our agreement and was outside of our control (although we did our best in feeding and caring for her dogs in secret as well)

Subsequently, the breeder M was forced to leave her portion of the building as her agreement with B (the ex-owner) was expiring. She relocated her business to another area of the farmway.

Since then, many who saw M at the new location speculated that we, the DogMillRehomers are condoning and helping "ex-breeders" clear their "old stocks" and move on to new business. Many assumed that M was the ex-breeder that we bought the farm from, which is not true. The fact is that M was basically a tenant of B (the ex-owner), M is not an ex-breeder (she had always been a breeder) and she had no involvement with our rescue.

M's relocating her business is her personal decision and we had no say over the fate of her dogs, regrettably.

B (the ex-owner) himself is no longer involved in the puppy-trade, and has expressed wishes to not ever be involved in this anymore. Whatever happens to him is now a matter of AVA and the relevant bodies. You will be kept updated as it moves forward.

M is not related to us, B is no longer in the trade and is awaiting his fate.

That is that.

We have also received news that Volunteers from other shelters are using extremely strong and abusive language in their Facebook posts, attacking our volunteers with groundless assumptions and curses. We take a civilized stance on this matter and ask that these volunteers look towards facts in constructing their statements:

1) All of our monetary donations are backed by paper trails, receipts and accounting. We are graced with the expertise of volunteers well-versed and proficient in the accounting side of things. All monies are transacted through either Mutts and Muttens Foundation or AllPets Clinic. We take a firm stance in being held accountable for by the public.

2) None of our Dog Mill dogs have ever been placed into other shelters. The only movement of dogs out from Unit 9 is for either fostering/adoption while the latest large-scale movement is to Mutts and Mittens, where the dogs shall reside as the adoption drive continues to move forward.

3) The commitment of the DogMillRehomers is to rehome the dogs into loving homes. We have no wish to tussle with assumptions and libelous statements that tries to detract us from our work.

However, as the statements these volunteers from other shelters made are highly libelous, we have taken a stand in protecting the integrity of our hardworking and selfless volunteers. We will be requesting the removal of all such related postings, on Facebook and blogs and whatever medium of communication.

We remain committed to the betterment of animal welfare and social responsibility.

We have stated our stance, and trust in the community's assessment and logic.

Doggy Updates!!

An Update from one of our Adopters on Malee, now known as SmiLee, a letter from her adopter, Serene :

Hi All,

I am writing in as my own initiative to update all on MaLee which I took back from the dog mill on 24 April 2010, after seeing the updates on fostered and adopted dogs on your website.

Hopefully, my sharing will be of use to you to help spread the word for others to come forward for adoption, showing them that these dogs will and can blossom into beautiful ones under love and good care.

FYI, I renamed her SmiLee, and she is with me till date for 12 days, and has settled in very well into my family.

When I first brought her back almost 2 weeks ago, she was all skin and bones, had ticks, and bald patches all over her body, with her skin being terribly red all over.

I shaved her down the very next day and brought her to the vet for a full body checkup of which the vet diagnose her to have very bad ear infection on both ears. The doctor also did a skin scape on her then.

I just came back from SmiLee's review with the vet today and the skin scape is all clear, plus her ear infection is on the road to recovery as well.
I requested the vet to give her the annual vacinations today and will be arranging for her sterilisation, booster jab and dental scaling in a month's time.

During the 1st week of stay with me, I found SmiLee to be a gal with a very sweet temperament, always ready to wag her tail when we go near her. She is very docile, listens to commands and so far, has made very few mistakes when I was paper training her for the 1st week.

In fact, by the end of the 1st week, she is more or less paper-trained and I have allowed her full access to the rest of the house (with supervision). Now she has also passed the test of being alone at home when I had to go back to office for work, so far no mistakes no messes when I leave her alone at home for short periods of time.

Till date, she has not given me much problem or fuss since we took her in, such that she is even capable of sleeping quietly on her own (with no whining or fuss) when we have to leave her behind the playpen while I was paper training her.
She follows me around everywhere whenever I am home just like my little shadow, and will lie quietly underneath my chair when I am working on my desk. Now she is also able to sleep quietly on her own in her own bed everynight.

I have attached some random photos of her to share. I didnt take much photos though, hoping to take more when her fur is grown out more.

I will also be following with the necessary people from your end for her adoption.

Lastly, I just want to say that I am glad I did my little part in helping one of the many dogs from the mill.

Hopefully, from my experience, there will be many others who will have the courage in taking the 1st step to foster/adopt, at least that was what I did when I received the fateful call to help the many dogs at the mill, not knowing what to expect then.

Photos will show her being "blur blur" during the 1st few days when she was with me, and subsequent photos will show her playing with the kong I bought for her, and SmiLee in her bed which I bought a rabbit soft toy to keep her company while she sleeps.

Latest Updates (30th April 2010)

Dear friends and fellow animal-lovers, this is the latest update:

1) 3 dogs have passed away and left us for a better place. We now have a total of 75 dogs in the kennel, of which 49 dogs are still inside awaiting a good home. 26 have been either fostered or adopted to date.

2) Fostering option will only be available for dogs which are sick or with medical conditions, as we believe they are the ones most needing an urgent change of environment. All others will remain in the kennels to provide them with a greater opportunity to be viewed by potential adopters during visitings. Fostered dogs will have their pictures posted on a board in the kennel for potential adopters to look at, as well.

3) Please note that there will be No photography in the kennel. This applies to both volunteers and visitors. Only Davis KK, Woon, Monica and Nicholas are authorized to take photos. Thank you for your kind understanding.

4) Please refrain from bringing your children into the premises.

DOGMILLREHOMERS: Help save the 75 dogs!

BACKGROUND

A breeder/owner at Pasir Ris wanted to close operations and sell his existing stock of 75 dogs to other breeders. Concerned dog rescuers banded together to save the dogs. They bought over the dogs, rented the place for a month to build up the dogs with the plan of finding them good adoptive homes.

A group of volunteers have been going there for the past few days to clean up the place, wash the dogs, feed the dogs, send the dogs to vets for help.

FACTS

1 Many of the dogs have skin problems, tick fever, are suffering from malnuitrition etc.Several need medical care. We are still in the process of sending the dogs for checkups.

2 There are no pups for adoption

3 These are 'used dogs' (used for breeding) and they have been traumatized. They need a lot of tender loving care from loving homes.

4 Many are HDB sized . Some are bigger.

5 All dogs will be sterilised before adoption

6 There will be adoption fees. These will go to support the medical and sterilisation/ other costs to help the dogs. But it is strictly NON PROFIT.

7 No one below 18 need apply to adopt the dogs

8 Viewings for adoption will be strictly by appointment with the team leaders by emails only.

No instant adoption on the spot.
Interviews will be conducted.
Weekends 15 min slots, Weekdays half an hour slots. 15 mins grace will be given for late comers when they come to view the dogs. (thereafter, rescheduling is needed)

NEEDS

1 FINANCE: A new bank account has been opened for this rescue project
There will be strict accountability.
Finances will be primarily for food, shelter upkeep and medical bills. (When volunteers first came to the shelter, they found only Mama-lemon washing liquid and water hose for cleaning the place....and only plain rice for the dogs.) Volunteers have since been bringing and cooking food for the dogs
